Girl Sense

DSC_0051Girl Sense is a small group experience designed to explore the six senses that girls use to navigate the world—sight, sound, smell, touch, taste, and inner-knowing. Each week we will learn one mindfulness based practice designed to help them manage stress in their lives, hear from each participant about things that have come up for her that week, do an arts project or activity, and we will weave in lessons about mind-body connections.  The groups are light, fun, and help put girls at this crucial age in touch with their own inner wisdom and self-knowledge.

This class meets on Sunday mornings for seven weeks, the first six weeks are just for the girls and the seventh week we invite mothers, aunties, and grandmothers to join us for an inspirational session led by the girls. Each class is 90 minutes in length.

This class was designed and is facilitated by Alisha Wilkes (RN,  Nurse-Midwife candidate, and prenatal yoga instructor) and Jodilyn Owen (LM,CPM).

“We love Girl Sense! My daughter cannot wait to go each week. She enjoys the fun, sensory based activities, and comes home each week with a huge smile on her face. And she may not always realize it, but I know she is learning about her body and her feelings in a positive, supportive environment. She is learning things that it took me until my 30’s to learn!! Thank you Girl Sense, for giving my daughter a wonderful space to be a girl and to feel truly comfortable with who she is!”

“The one day a week I can get my daughter out of bed without her complaining about what she has to do that day is the day she gets to go to Girl Sense.  This group of girls just her age has been such a gift for her.  She comes away from each gathering full of insights and smiles and can’t wait to tell me all about the fun things they did each time on the ride home.  She has also become more calm in interactions with her sister and friends at school. Thank you for providing such a unique offering for this age group.  We feel so grateful that she is part of Girl Sense.”

“Where was this when we were kids?”

“I’ve lived my whole life and no one ever told me these things.  Observing this group has changed the way I see myself and the world.”
